Jabeen Qadri is a karachi based expressive artist that paints and draws from emotional disturbance, suppression and finding her way to fulfilment.

I create from my life story

I started painting and writing as a form of emotional release when I was going through mental and physical illness and experiencing existential crisis.

My art showcases the evolution and cycle of emotions as one’s life progresses with time. It details the emotional chaos of suppressing one’s true self while facing one’s immediate society’s unachievable standards of intellect and beauty. It touches upon achieving a sense of calm and wholeness amidst said turmoil, and it demonstrates the in-between phase of emotional development; of introspection and reflection.

I focus primarily on portraits of the body and fuse it with details and intricacies of nature to both soothe the eyes and give room to stimulate fantasy. I do so to make the observer feel seen and heard as they experience their own emotional turmoil and find a space and validation for their pain.

I use acrylic paints and charcoal frequently in my work as well as writing prose and poetry.

My work is divided into series. These are phases from my life and yours too and they are always shifting; the beauty of life is in the process.

In Semester 2 of my postgrad degree I've learned t In Semester 2 of my postgrad degree I've learned the importance of safety and familiarity for an artist.

I learn so much about myself and my creative practice when I sing with camera and without. Especially when singing a popular song like this one. I can see where I'm natural and where I perform. When I sing with my natural voice and when I try to make my voice sound like a professional singer. Where I own myself and where I conform to the popular. Where I feel safe. Where I feel unsafe. And the role my pose, body movements and hand placements play in this.

Thanks to my instructor @phayxaan_ for teaching this technique of learning body movements through videos.

This series "Mundane to Magic" is a collection of photographs I took during 2017 to 2021, at random times I stopped to notice the random, mundane moments of my life around the city of Karachi. These photographs were not taken as a photographer. They were taken as a girl who is experiencing the city as she's trying to find herself and find happiness in the mundane.

The photography was accompanied by a short essay which speaks about the subjectivity of fun and occupancy of public spaces. It can be read on Mai Karachi website.

Guess who turned 30? 20 year old Jabeen never saw Guess who turned 30? 20 year old Jabeen never saw this coming. If only I could go back in time and tell myself "Jabeen, you will grow up smart, talented, beautiful and kind and you will always be allowed to feel young at heart, be silly and make mistakes. Don't be so serious about life and the future. You will fall many times and hit rock bottom, like all great people do. But you will always ALWAYS rise up and you will show others how to rise up too. It's okay if you're heartbroken, you felt unsafe and unprotected and misunderstood. You will be loved by not one or few but many. People WILL appreciate you for who you are, just the way you are and you will meet wonderful people who will help you along your path and and their words and kindness will catch you by surprise. You will lose your dad by the time you turn 24 and you might never recover from the shock and nothing will matter anymore because a part of you will be buried with him. You will spend some years being severely ill and numb and isolated. But you will open your heart to life once more. Everything will fall into it's rightful place, even if things don't work out the way you hoped. You will experience real life miracles. You will stop needing people or things. You will love God again and you will find meaning and purpose in life again. You will find beauty in the mundane. You will learn to forgive. You will learn to let go. And once you do, you will become unconditionally happy and cherish every minute of your life. You will be whole. You will be phenomenal"
